THANK GOODNESS THAT’S OVER! (jokingnotjoking). I’m not a huge fan of Christmas. Sure, I enjoy some aspects of it. It’s the stress and emotional baggage that accompanies the holiday season I could do without. On the other hand, New Year’s is something I look forward to. As much as I fancy a good party, the feeling of a clean slate and a fresh start is what fires me up. Not one for making resolutions, I have adopted the popular practice of creating a one-word theme for the year. Everything from choosing the perfect word to thinking about how I will manifest it throughout the year gets me charged.
The One-Word Theme
When my son was born, my one-word theme was “surrender.” (Sometimes words choose us, or so it would seem.) Another time it was “create” and then “joy.” A couple of years ago it was “expansion.” I wanted to push myself to try new things, stretch my comfort zone, and grow my businesses.
The Power of Intention
For 2018, I chose the word “intention.” By nature, I am laid back…maybe a tad too much. Admittedly, I leave a lot to chance. I wing it. I go with the flow. It has worked out for me on countless occasions, but with a milestone birthday coming up, I want to feel more in control of my destiny.
Yes, I am well aware the road to hell is paved with good intentions. But I’ve heard and even experienced, the power of intention as well.
When you’re connected to the power of intention, everywhere you go, and everyone you meet is affected by you and the energy you radiate. As you become the power of intention, you’ll see your dreams being fulfilled almost magically, and you’ll see yourself creating huge ripples in the energy fields of others by your presence and nothing more.
~Wayne Dyer
Too “woo woo” for you? To me, being intentional means purposefully choosing what I want my life to look like and how I want to feel. Rather than dropping a bad habit or denying myself as many resolutions require, I want to say “Yes”. Intentionally creating a desired outcome keeps me focused on the things I am passionate about instead of passively allowing s*** to happen.
Word Gets Around
The thing I like best about choosing a one-word theme is how it sets the tone for the year. If you start to use your theme word as a filter through which you make all your decisions, (big or small), it can positively influence all corners of your life including health, relationships, career and…wait for it…even your wardrobe choices! I have found the impact can be profound, but hey, don’t take my word for it.
Mom’s the Word
A few days ago, some mom-blogger friends of mine and I shared our theme words with each other. In our discussion, they mentioned words such as “worthy”, “mindful”, “love”, “simplify”, “fearless”, “focused” and “grit”. How juicy! Can you imagine how dressing and showing up in the world would be a completely different experience when you’re truly living your theme word? Would you step out of your comfort zone? Hell ya, you would!
Put in a Good Word
Over to you. What would you like more of in your life? How do you want to show up in the world? What will YOUR one-word theme be for 2018?
Wishing you a happy AND stylish New Year!
