Velvet Wrap Dress

I thought it would be fun to mix things up a bit this month and asked Lisa McLatchie to be a guest stylist in our One Item, Two Stylists feature. Lisa is a super busy and terrifically talented personal stylist, personal shopper and mompreneur from the Toronto area. Lisa believes your clothing and how you choose to dress is a significant form of self-care that has a positive effect on many areas of your life.  I could not agree more. Although our styles differ, we share a weakness for pattern mixing, leopard print and sparkle and a passion for helping our clients transform. Scroll down to see how Lisa and I each styled this velvet wrap dress in our unique way.

I’m drawn to an outfit rich with textures. This velvet dress has a luxurious feeling, and the shape is alluring. The wrap style of it will instantly give any wearer an hourglass shape.

I chose a boxy topper to balance the uber femme cut of the dress and add another layer of texture on top of the soft and supple velvet.

The wrap-around necklace draws attention to the decolletage and face. The tassel also mimics the fringe in the topper.

A metallic clutch gives the edginess I crave and ups the visual interest of the outfit with additional texture.

These shoes are a neutral colour, yet the embellished toes (even more texture!) make them unique and party perfect.

Between the velvet, the body-conscious shape of this dress, and the low neckline, this dress is definitely a feminine and sexy piece – which I am all about!

But I am also about creating juxtaposition in my style and outfits, so I decided to pair it with a cool leather jacket to add a little edge. I went with a burgundy jacket though because it’s not as predictable as black, but also because I wanted a colour to “pop” against the neutral tone of the dress.

I then added a long pendant style necklace that drops down the neckline of the dress to highlight that sexy area.

From there, it is all about the statement/personality pieces! I went with a burgundy embellished shoe and a playful bumblebee cocktail ring. Both co-ordinate nicely with the other colours in the outfit. And then I completed the look with a clutch in my all time fave neutral – animal print!

Thanks for playing with me, Lisa!
