Conscious Consumption Consignment Store

Consignment Refinement – Dragon and Phoenix Will Make Your Wardrobe Fantasies Come True

Most of the time, when I discover a new product, service or store that I think is the bee’s knees, I want to share it with everyone I know. Every once in a while though, I like to keep a good thing to myself. (C’mon, I know you do it too.) I’ve been a fan of Dragon and Phoenix Designer Consignments for a while now, but have selfishly kept it my little secret. If you only knew all the treasures I’ve found there, you’d understand why I didn’t want to mess things up for myself. However, with an increased number of our clients and readers expressing a desire to become more eco-conscious consumers, and wanting to shop consignment, I figured it’s time to come clean.

I got a chance to sit down with Faidra, to chat about their family-owned and -operated business. I was fascinated to learn some of the ins and outs of my favourite (and YOUR soon-to-be-favourite) consignment shop.

What do you look for in an item of clothing (quality, the age of clothing, style, etc.)?

Merchandise must be seasonal, clean, in like-new condition, and purchased within the last two years. If the piece was exceptionally trendy last year but part of a fad that’s no longer as desirable this season, we may not take it. Essentially, we provide a retail shopping experience for about one-third the price.

What sorts of labels do you carry?

All Saints, Aritzia, Banana Republic, BCBG, Boss, Club Monaco, Eileen Fisher, Elie Tahari, Free People, Isabel Marant, J. Crew, James Perse, Luisa Cerano, Lululemon, Michael Kors, Prada, Rag & Bone, Theory, Tory Burch, Vince, Wilfred.

We stay away from disposable fast-fashion labels like Forever 21, H&M, Topshop, Uniqlo, and Zara as the price point and quality are too low. We prefer to carry high-quality items for the same price you’d pay for fast-fashion new.

You can find our full consignment details including a terms and conditions document for download on our website www.dragonandphoenix.ca.

Our consignees have the disposable income to treat themselves to the latest fashions, and they’re environmentally and fiscally conscious, so they know clothing and accessories need not have only one life.

What sizes do you carry?

Everything from 00 – 16. Lately, we’re expanding our selection of sizes 12-16 to reflect realistically changing body shapes. The merchandise in those sizes is fantastic, and there’s demand for which we’re happy to provide!

Is there a minimum number of items someone must present before they can drop off clothes?

Yes, we require a minimum of 15 items to start a new contract. Once we have a contractual relationship set up, however, consignees are welcome to drop-off as many or as few items as they like.

Who is your typical client?

No such thing! We get young women from high school and UBC who are aspiring fashionistas wanting to get triple their buying power; to affluent women who are simply bored with retail. The beauty of D&P is that in addition to carrying what’s in-style, we have labels from all over the world, which reflects the diversity of our consignees who are global travellers.

Why are Dragon and Phoenix customers so loyal?

We’ve been in business for 35 years, and we mean it when we say we’re a community. We’re a family run business with some employees who have been with us for more than a decade. As opposed to the kind of informal experience one has shopping big-box retail, we’re on a first name basis with the majority of our customers and consignees. If we’re not, we’d love for them to introduce themselves. When you come in, you’re taken care of by someone who loves what they do and who has a vested interest in your satisfaction. We want everyone to feel welcome and comfortable, and we do everything possible to create an inclusive, positive environment for everyone.

What sets Dragon and Phoenix apart from other consignment stores?

For Consignees: We make everything easy. Our consignment terms are the simplest in the business, we never make it hard for consignees to collect their money, and we are up-front with our discounting and sales policies. We’ll never quote one price and then sell things for another. Our company values transparency and accountability.

For Shoppers: We make it fun and easy! We go to great lengths to ensure fair pricing (meaning we don’t haggle). Dragon and Phoenix only accepts the best quality merchandise. We want to make everyone feel welcome.
